FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE:
“Too much was happening, too many emotions swirled around inside, for me to make sense of much. But one thing was clear: No one could know.”
Every married couple has their own secrets. But Maggie Kneip’s husband had one she felt compelled to keep for nearly twenty five years. Now, Maggie is opening up about it in her emotionally charged memoir NOW EVERYONE WILL KNOW: The Perfect Husband, His Shattering Secret, My Rediscovered Life (Garden Street Books; ISBN 978-069253781-7; Original Trade Paperback; December 2015).

By: Maggie Kneip
In the 1980s and 90s, America was a society driven by fear of the HIV/AIDS epidemic from which, Maggie, a young wife and mother, feels immune until her husband, John Andrew, a rising star editor at the Wall Street Journal, falls drastically ill and is diagnosed with AIDS.
When Maggie asks John how he contracted the virus, he first blames her for giving it to him, before admitting to having slept with men. This shocking, embittering accusation was then sealed up in her vault of secrets. “I told my mother about John’s accusation, then stashed it away…Like John’s illness, it became a secret no one could know. And something I tried very hard to forget.”
Devastated by her husband’s betrayal and afraid for her family’s health, Maggie, who only weeks before had given birth to their second child, is relieved to discover that neither she nor their children have contracted AIDS from John, but his diagnosis and death are only the beginning of the obstacles she faces endemic to HIV/AIDS at that time: the fact that mostly gay men are affected by the virus; the isolation that comes with being the wife of a victim; the disease’s stigma, causing paranoia in her town and children’s school; and the challenge of keeping her marriage and existence of her husband a secret in order to protect her children.
It is only when her children grow up and she undertakes a journey of self-discovery aligned with our new world of sexual tolerance that Maggie decides she can, at last, speak about her husband, and tell the truth.
An honest, unflinching look at the damaging nature of relationship and family secrets and the closure that comes with facing them, NOW EVERYONE WILL KNOW asks us to embrace the good, the bad, and ugly truths that make us who we are.
