The Girl Who Ignored Ghosts by K.C. Tansley

The Girl Who Ignored Ghosts“Ghosts don’t exist. They can’t touch me. They can’t hurt me. They aren’t real.”

This simple mantra has saved 17-year-old Kat Preston’s life on countless occasions. It stops ghosts, which she calls “unbelievables,” from manifesting in her world. Refusing to believe is the only way to protect herself from the ghost that tried to steal her life when she was a child.

But some things can’t be ignored, and the ghosts are done letting Kat have a normal life in this YA time-travel murder mystery THE GIRL WHO IGNORED GHOSTS (Beckett Publishing Group, ISBN 978-1-943024-00-1, August 2015), by award-winning author Kourtney Heintz as K.C. Tansley.  When Kat is alone doing research for her prep school teacher on the mysterious wedding night murders at Castle Creighton in 1886, the ghosts make their reappearance. Kat uses everything she has to keep them from breaking through, but she knows this project is putting her ghost-free world at risk.

Working on this project is the stepping-stone to her dream school, Georgetown University; however, Kat can’t keep the ghosts away and solve the wedding night murders that are steeped in unbelievables. The mysterious deaths of the bride and groom, Cassie Mallory and Sebastian Radcliffe, triggered the “Radcliffe Curse”—a curse that leaves the oldest Radcliffe male heir dead on his 23rd birthday. This project sets Kat on a collision course with all the unbelievables.

If it were just about the murders, Kat might be able to say no. But when she finds out that the ghost who saved her life and the ghost who nearly stole her life were both bridesmaids at this wedding, the murders become about her and the ghosts. Kat has to find out what happened to those ghosts and why they both came into her life, and that means being a part of this on-site research project.

Kat and the uptight project leader Evan trek to Castle Creighton, an old fortress that resides off the coast of Connecticut on the remote Isle of Acacia. The project takes a dark twist when they learn they only have a few weeks to solve the mystery before the current Radcliffe heir, Joshua, dies on his 23rd birthday.

Kat must confront her fear of the unbelievables when she’s yanked through a magic portal and Evan follows her. They are transported back in time to 1886 and fall into the bodies of two wedding guests, Toria Langley and Alistair Kingsley. With each passing day, Kat and Evan grow weaker and have more and more trouble staying in control of the bodies they inhabit. Together, the must try to figure out the wedding night murders before they fade into the past forever.

THE GIRL WHO IGNORED GHOSTS is a fast-paced YA time-travel murder mystery novel that combines time-traveling, paranormal, and gothic mystery genres to weave a tale full of ancestral curses, powerful spells, strange connections, and inherited surprises.

Unwelcome Inheritance by By Lisa Sue Woititz and Dr. Janet G. Woititz, Ed.D.

Unwelcome InheritanceIn 1983, Dr. Janet G. Woititz published a groundbreaking book, Adult Children of Alcoholics, which became the premiere work on the subject and remained on the New York Times best-seller list for more than 40 weeks. Her inspiration for writing it stemmed from being married to an alcoholic and seeing the suffering her children were going through, along with her desire to help others going through the same experience. Now, a new book further explores the reasons why adult children of alcoholics or addicts, “ACoA” for short, continue the destructive cycle and how to stop it.

No one is better equipped to carry the message than Dr. Woititz’s daughter Lisa, an ACoA and former program director of Institute for Counseling and Training, “Dr. Jan’s” clinic.  UNWELCOME INHERITANCE: Break Your Family’s Cycle of Addictive Behaviors (Hazelden; June 2015; $14.95; Original Trade Paperback) by Lisa Sue Woititz and Dr. Janet G. Woititz, continues the healing process by helping ACoAs understand past experiences and look deeper at how they live today.

This extension of Dr. Jan’s best-seller describes the characteristics of ACoAs and what it means to be codependent and explores how addictive behavior is part of an “unwelcome inheritance.” Also explored is how being an ACoA affects parenting and what to do when your child is using drugs and alcohol. Most important, Unwelcome Inheritance analyzes the power and ability an ACoA has to break the cycle. As a child of an alcoholic, Lisa Woititz also shares personal stories from her childhood. Each chapter concludes with questions or tips, along with a quote from Dr. Jan that additionally delves into these topics. Also included are Dr. Jan’s thoughts and advice through previously unpublished writings.

UNWELCOME INHERITANCE examines:

  • What adult children of alcoholics/addicts can do to help break the cycle
  • How looking at past family lineage can help ACoAs expand their views and gain a better understanding of the disease of addiction
  • Approaches ACoAs can take when their child is using alcohol or other drugs
  • Why reconnecting with an addicted parent could either be a step forward in the healing process or unhealthy and dangerous
  • How self-examination, letting go of expectations, and trusting one’s instincts all contribute to positive change

UNWELCOME INHERITANCE is a must-read source for anyone looking to break the cycle of addictive behavior for themselves and for the next generation.

Lisa Sue Woititz managed Dr. Woititz’s Institute for Counseling and Training for a number of years and has worked in the mental health, substance abuse, and criminal justice fields.

Marijuana by Kevin P. Hill, M.D.

Marijuana

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE:

The debate over marijuana legalization has never been more heated as the issue continues to divide policy makers, the medical community, and the public alike. As the topic of medical versus recreational use continues, many states have already decriminalized possession, while 23 states and the District of Columbia have legalized marijuana in some form. While it appears that acceptance of marijuana usage is growing, there is much misinformation about it and a lot more that needs to be understood regarding its effects on people, especially on the developing brains of young people.

MARIJUANA: The Unbiased Truth about the World’s Most Popular Weed (Hazelden; March 2015; $14.95; Original Trade Paperback) by Kevin P. Hill, M.D., a leading expert in marijuana research and addiction treatment and one of the few impartial sources on the subject, provides the evidence both for and against marijuana usage. Hill’s book covers the complexities of marijuana use statistics, the major myths about marijuana use, the controversies around decriminalizing and legalizing marijuana, and the challenges of treating marijuana addiction, including working with parents.

Hill discusses the history of marijuana, how it was first used as medicine to help treat many physical problems, and how a gap has developed today between the science of medical marijuana and the public’s perception of it. He also talks about how the media contributes to the controversy by presenting the more extreme views without fully examining the facts. Hill describes the effects of marijuana on anxiety, depression, and critical thinking and how the effects of marijuana differ in adults and adolescents. The arguments for and against  decriminalization and the legalization of marijuana for recreational and medical uses are presented as he weighs in with his own perspective based on years of research and working with hundreds of clients in his addiction practice.

In MARIJUANA, Kevin P. Hill speaks to important questions such as:

  • Is marijuana a harmful and addictive drug?
  • Does medical marijuana really help treat certain illnesses?
  • How does marijuana affect brain chemistry?
  • Is marijuana as dangerous as alcohol and other drugs?

This timely and important book states the facts and actual data regarding marijuana’s risks and benefits, allowing people to make the best informed decisions for themselves and their families.

Hill, M.D., M.H.S., is an assistant professor of psychiatry at Harvard’s McLean Hospital in Belmont, Massachusetts, and an addiction consultant with a number of professional sports organizations. High by Jodie Gould

High by Jodie GouldFOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE:

Some of us are predisposed to seek pleasure and tranquility by having a drink after work, taking a cigarette break, or partaking in more dangerous substances. What if there were a way to experience these same effects without the harmful aspects?

A national survey by Survata Inc., commissioned for a groundbreaking new book, proves that many safe and sober activities reduces stress, anxiety, and depression, as well as increase health. HIGH: 6 Principles for Guilt-Free Pleasure and Escape (Hazelden; April 2015; $15.95; Original Trade Paperback), by award-winning author and writer Jodie Gould, shows how these exercises and activities result in emotional, physical, and spiritual satisfaction without any potentially harmful side effects. Gould, who has shared her tips with Oprah, ABC World News Tonight, and many other programs, reveals the 6 Pleasure Principles to help transform your life.

Principle #1 is Move: Physically moving the body helps to relieve anxiety but also enhances concentration, learning, and memory. Principle #2 is Restore: A variety of activities—including yoga, meditation, prayer, acupuncture, and many more—can restore and revitalize your mind, body, and spirit. Principle #3 is Connect: Bonding with family, friends, and the community can aid in fending off depression and loneliness. Principle #4 is Create: Expressing and expanding the inner self through creative and artistic activities can reduce stress and help you to get in touch with your feelings. Principle #5 is Celebrate: Affirming life and experiencing joy through laughter and by being grateful, for example, can protect us from detrimental effects of day-to-day struggles and pain. Principle #6 is Give: We can find purpose by volunteering, which in turn increases endorphin production and enhances the immune system.

In addition, Gould reviews the brain’s role in seeking pleasure, how it works when it’s craving drugs and alcohol, the various ways that even animals seek euphoria, and the philosophy of pleasure seeking by examining the insights of philosophers such as Socrates, Plat, and Epicurus.

HIGH explains to readers:

  • How the 6 Pleasure Principles work and the reasons they are effective substitutes for drugs and alcohol
  • Why people are predisposed to seek an altered state of consciousness
  • Which activities and exercises increase self-confidence, lower stress and depression, and form deeper bonds with others
  • The differences of natural highs vs. chemical highs
  • The evolution of drug and alcohol use from the Paleolithic era to modern times

HIGH by Jodie Gould is a guide on how seek guilt-free for pleasure and escape that is productive, healthy, and personally rewarding.
