“Psychology presently studies superficial morality and deep morality. Superficial morality can be found in the quick, unreflective moral intuitions that we have. Deep morality is the reflective choices we make that involve honesty, faith, humility and ideals. Damon and Colby is the GO TO book for deep morality.”

—Martin Seligman, Zellerbach Family Professor of Psychology, University of Pennsylvania

“Anne Colby and Bill Damon have written a very important, lucid, and intelligent book that represents a paradigm shift in our understanding of moral development. The Power of Ideals illuminates in fresh ways how a meaningful life develops…The appeal of this book should be to all who devote their lives to the moral, civic, spiritual or intellectual growth of young people.” —George E. Vaillant MD, Professor of Psychiatry, Harvard Medical School

Prominent recent scientific studies of morality, widely covered in the mass media, claim to show that human moral choice is driven either by base biological responses or by situational factors beyond an individual’s control. These claims have led to a cynical and dispiriting cultural view of our moral potential. In this so-called “new science” view, people are seen as intrinsically selfish, hypocritical, and ruthless. Such an understanding of morality removes from the equation age-old concepts such as agency, conscience, virtue, and ideals. It seems to justify doing whatever it takes to get ahead, no matter how many others are trampled along the way.

William Damon and Anne Colby, two scholars at Stanford University and authors of many critically acclaimed books, present a more positive and hopeful view of moral choice in a new work, THE POWER OF IDEALS: The Real Story of Moral Choice (Oxford University Press; May 1, 2015; $29.95; Hardcover). The book provides new findings about the power of the human moral sense, based on a more authentic method of research, and firmly counters the conclusions of the “new science” of moral psychology that has swept our culture. .

In THE POWER OF IDEALS, Damon and Colby thoroughly examine the full range of available research and theory on moral choice, including their own previous groundbreaking studies. They present a comprehensive and compelling new theory that takes account of new science claims but also includes capacities that enable even ordinary people to act on noble ideals and make principled moral choices. Then, using their pioneering research method of “exemplar methodology,” Damon and Colby analyze the cases of six influential 20th century leaders whose lives demonstrated exceptional moral commitment. The six leaders are Jane Addams; Eleanor Roosevelt, Dietrich Bonhoeffer, Abraham Heschel, Dag Hammarskjold, and Nelson Mandela. By examining the lives of these six people and the contributions they made, Damon and Colby bring to life their view that people at crucial times can and do make active, conscience-based choices that powerfully influence events in their lives and even the world beyond. Damon and Colby show how people develop this capacity by cultivating essential virtues such as truthfulness, humility, and faith in ideals beyond their own self-interest.

THE POWER OF IDEALS also makes clear that virtue, commitment and moral aspiration are not limited to powerful world leaders. Ordinary people have the capacity to grow morally, realizing their potential for lives of generosity, integrity, meaning, and genuine human connection. This book provides an unparalleled source that educators, families, and institutional leaders can use to support the development of a more positive morality, that vast realm of social actions, intentions, emotions, judgments aimed at providing benefits (and preventing damage) to people, society, and the world beyond the self.”

THE POWER OF IDEALS is the most important and hopeful look at contemporary moral psychology on the scene today. It provides a needed push back against the cynicism and passivity that threaten our contemporary world.

Menakem also examines some of the most common perceived issues that cause conflicts in relationships: money, sexual intimacy, kids, and in-laws. Power and control also play roles in emotional stalemates as both are often misunderstood. Learning to care for yourself benefits you and your partner and contributes to more intimate, healthier relationships. Menakem also discusses how therapy really works, what couples should expect when going to therapy, and what they should learn from it.

  • Real reasons that people get involved in romantic relationships
  • Differences between growth cycle and commonplace cruelty cycle

Those Who Remain by Ruth W. Crocker

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE:

Those Who Remain“With thoughtfulness and grace, she reconstructs…the experience of grief. A moving exploration of widowhood.”
Kirkus Reviews on Those Who Remain

She was 23 years old when she was widowed by war and rather than bury her husband in his coffin, she buried every memory of their brief life together.  Forty years later she exhumed the grave and came to terms with her loss and her grief.  Nominated for a Pushcart Prize in 2013 writer-teacher-actress Ruth W. Crocker brings her journey of love, loss, and inspiration to the page in her beautiful memoir THOSE WHO REMAIN: Remembrance and Reunion after War (Elm Grove Press; $18.95).

THOSE WHO REMAIN

Remembrance and Reunion after War

By: Ruth W. Crocker

Sometimes the reaction to loss is anger along with the need to be reckless and to search for meaning in what has happened.  In THOSE WHO REMAIN, Ruth W. Crocker was propelled by her complex emotions at the time.  On the one hand she needed to close the door on her previous life, and on the other she wanted to pay tribute to her husband’s memory and escape from her grief.  To this end she hiked up to the treacherous North Face of the Eiger, the most notorious mountain in the Swiss Alps, to spread her husband’s ashes at the top of the climb they were supposed to do together.

Weaving her beautifully-written recollections with diary entries, letters between her and her husband, and conversations with his comrades, Ruth gives readers an intimate glimpse into the life of a woman who faced her fears and braved the forces of nature to learn that she could survive anything that came her way.  A unique true story of grief and recovery with a surprising revelation, THOSE WHO REMAIN demonstrates the tenacious will of the human spirit to heal.

The Man With the Overcoat by David Finkle

The Man With the OvercoatFOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE:

“Why would anyone—he was soon to ask himself innumerable times—take a coat from a complete stranger only because it had been offered?”

You are standing, waiting for an elevator.  The doors open and a strange man hands you an overcoat, which you accept without thinking.  After a beat you realize that you are now standing at the same elevator in possession of said overcoat and its “owner” is nowhere to be seen.  Now what?

Theater critic, book reviewer, and writer David Finkle, whose characters encountered extraordinary people and events in his first book of short stories People Tell Me Things, is as entertaining as ever in his debut novel, THE MAN WITH THE OVERCOAT (Nth Position Press; April 28th, 2015; $6.99). In his book, Finkle focuses his creative talents on the main character Skip Gerber—a man in a quandary who travels through the depths of New York City to find the mysterious owner of the overcoat, which by the way, Skip and others have noted, actually suits him quite well indeed.

THE MAN WITH THE OVERCOAT

By: David Finkle

“Skip wasn’t about to tell his mother he was in Central Park looking at the statue of a man wearing an overcoat eerily similar to one he’d accepted for no good reason a few short hours earlier. She wouldn’t believe him. Who would believe him? He half didn’t believe himself.”

While following the clues he finds in the nooks and crannies of the coat itself, Skip is harangued by phone, by his mother Bernice, his broke brother Jerry, and his  snooty, sort-of fiancé, Faye—who is waiting for him to meet her for dinner with friends, downtown. People who help Skip with his scavenger hunt are taxicab drivers who believe that Skip is being followed; a group of partying drag queens who rename him Alice; and a woman he rescues from robbers—could she be the love of Skip’s life?

Where did this overcoat come from? Why are so many people interested in it? Has somebody been following him since the moment Skip put it on? And why are the gargoyles on the tops of buildings falling? Is it all a coincidence, or is the overcoat that has been placed in Skip’s care a dangerous talisman?

Like a classic Hitchcock thriller, THE MAN WITH THE OVERCOAT challenges its protagonist to venture out of his comfort zone and the life he thought he was happily living, into the strange unknown.
